By setting boundaries and prioritizing what’s important to me, I am able to balance between nurturing my private life and dedicating time to growing my career.

Different paths to the same goal

I first came across McKinsey after finalizing my M.B.A. At that time, I had worked in the healthcare industry in Australia and in tech in San Francisco for some years, and was curious to figure out how to have impact at scale and started exploring my opportunities. During my time in the M.B.A., I joined my first McKinsey event for women in product management across Europe, and found that McKinsey aligned with both my interests and goals.

Through my science degree I have developed a problem-solving mindset, providing me with the ability to effectively address challenges by breaking them down and identifying their underlying causes. Additionally, my work experience from the tech industry in the United States has provided me with valuable practical experience and insights into how tech companies are built and how to scale agile product delivery to deliver value. A combination of these experiences helps to strengthen my day-to-day work in McKinsey.

A piece of advice

My best advice to those who are considering a career in management consulting, is to reflect on what your goals are, what you are hoping to aspire to achieve, and reflecting on how consulting aligns with that. That will help you to pave the best path for yourself and to make your own McKinsey.

Another important advice is to set boundaries in your work life so that you can prioritize what is important to you in your personal life. In the beginning it can be quite difficult to know when to set those boundaries, but after some experience it was easier to understand the expectations towards me as a consultant and I could then find the right balance. I also realized the important of finding things in my personal life that gave me energy to be more effective and bring my best self to my work life.
