The role of a VA is to translate our consultants’ ideas into easy-to-read, compelling graphics.

Most of our work takes place in PowerPoint. When I applied for the job a year ago, I thought it would be a piece of cake. The induction training made me realize how wrong I was. Perfection is not about knowing all the functions PowerPoint offers, but about mastering the art and science of designing great-looking presentations while respecting the authors’ wishes and our firm’s guidelines.

It took months before I became a self-standing VA – one who pays attention to details that can make or break any presentation, who is patient, easygoing, and sometimes assertive, especially when questions of substance and format must be resolved with consultants to clarify ambiguity and make timely, fact-based decisions.

They say you can do anything if you set your mind to it at McKinsey. You can learn to use more advanced graphic programs, including Photoshop and InDesign. These give you access to very creative assignments such as designing invitations, posters, brochures and the like. Such requests don’t come every day, but they are a very nice outlet for creativity when they do.
