Writer - Internal Communications

  • Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred 
  • 5-8 years of professional writing experience for newspapers, magazines, TV/radio, digital or corporate communications departments, ideally with a blend of journalistic storytelling and corporate experience  
  • Exceptional writing and storytelling skills with a focus on creativity and quality 
  • Capable of meeting tight deadlines with a can-do, positive attitude
  • Professional and collegial style that can work with a broad range of internal stakeholders

Who You'll Work With

You’ll be part of our Global Internal Communications team, based in Atlanta or New York.  As part of a creative team of 15+ professionals, including strategists, writers, designers, video and Web producers, and developers, you will create intelligent, useful, and entertaining content that reflects the firm's global, strategic priorities.

You’ll work with senior leaders to help them advance the firm’s priorities and advise them on the best ways to use strategic storytelling as a way to effect change.  You’ll also get to know a wide variety of global communications professionals who continually share best practices and learn from one another. 

What You'll Do

You’ll inform, engage and energize the firm’s global workforce through compelling storytelling. 

In this role you’ll focus on storytelling for our flagship internal digital magazine, McKinsey News, along with a weekly email newsletter for 30,000+ McKinsey colleagues globally.  You’ll find new and innovative ways to bring stories to life, primarily through prose but also audio, video, and interactive storytelling. 

You’ll serve as an advocate for creative storytelling on behalf of our audience, using best practices and audience feedback/analytics to inform and refine your ideas. Efficiency is also critical; you’ll often juggle multiple writing assignments while publishing new content every week. 

On a typical day, you will create 250 to 1,200-word articles for internal firm news delivered primarily via McKinsey’s intranet and email newsletter, including conducting interviews, drafting storylines, and delivering well-crafted, accurate stories that requires minimal editing. You will also interact with internal stakeholders to collect their input and manage the approval process for finished work. 

Your role will require you to participate in team calls and story meetings to brainstorm and pitch new ideas. You will evaluate new story ideas together with the Managing Editor and Head of Editorial. You will provide input during production process (e.g. layout, graphic design) and where relevant, you will write and interview for other formats and purposes, such as email, video, podcast, and interactive pieces (infographics, quizzes, polls, soundboards, etc.)
