As a Contracts Counsel, you will be based in one of our firm locations in Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, or Colombia, and will be part of our Public Sector, Social and Healthcare Legal Center of Expertise (CoE) within the LatAm Legal team, reporting to the CoE’s Team Lead - Associate General Counsel based in Colombia.
This Legal Center of Expertise advises strategic and holistic legal management throughout the entire procurement cycle and oversees client-facing legal matters across Latin America for clients in the public sector (including national, regional, state, provincial and local governments; other public bodies, including ministries, agencies, and regulators; as well as multilateral organizations), social sector (including non-profit institutions, philanthropic foundations, or nongovernmental organizations), state-owned enterprises, as well as clients in the healthcare and education sectors.
The work is fast-paced and involves problem-solving that can vary from routine questions to complex and sophisticated legal matters. You will be responsible for handling the preparation, review, drafting, and negotiation of commercial contracts as well as end-to-end RFP legal support in LatAm countries (particularly Mexico and Spanish speaking countries), and for advising internal clients on legal issues related thereto, under the supervision and guidance of the CoE lead and other Legal Department attorneys in LatAm. Additionally, you will be a member of McKinsey & Company’s Global Public Sector Legal Center of Expertise.
You will work closely with other lawyers in LatAm and in the global Legal Department, and will be expected to liaise with a number of individuals and teams within the firm (e.g., partners, consulting teams, risk, compliance, finance, corporate tax, professional development, office and sector leadership, and local administrative leaders) for offices in Spanish speaking LatAm and Mexico.

- Law degree and professional legal qualification / admission to practice law in at least one jurisdiction in LatAm
- 7+ years in a top multinational corporation’s legal department, at a public sector organization or a top tier law-firm, drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial contracts
- Demonstrated ability to draft, revise, and negotiate commercial contracts such as service agreements, confidentiality agreements, master consulting agreements, SoW’s, independent consultant agreements, and indemnity agreements
- Experience with RFP review and response, legal review of forms and other compliance related documents, communicating contractual requirements and supporting colleagues in preparing tender documents
- Professional experience in public sector contracts/public procurement, healthcare and/or education sectors, either in-house, at a public sector organization, a private company or a law firm is a strong plus
- Ability to work in an international and multicultural environment throughout several jurisdictions. Prior experience navigating different cultures and legal regimes is a strong plus
- Excellent organizational skills, sense of prioritization and judgment, including the ability to initiate tasks independently and see them through to completion
- Proficient in rational decision making based on data, facts, and logical reasoning
- Ability to handle high volume of work and operate under pressure, recognize priorities, and manage time effectively, in a complex and largely autonomous work environment
- Ability to function independently and autonomously, in a high performing, fast-paced work environment, with moderate supervision, and awareness of when to syndicate with, and involve another colleague and more senior manager
- Ability to work or attend meetings outside of traditional business hours or take on projects with limited or no notice at times
- Strong communication skills. Excellent speaking, writing and negotiating skills in Spanish and English, with the ability to adjust your style to suit different perspectives and seniority levels, including business settings with senior executives with non-legal backgrounds. Portuguese knowledge is a strong plus
