Associate General Counsel - Immigration

  • JD degree with top academic credentials including bar admission/license to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction
  • 5+ years of Latin America business immigration law experience (with top law firm or multinational corporation)
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills

Who You'll Work With

You will be based in our Sao Paulo office, as part of the Immigration Legal Department. 

The Legal Department is a diverse and dynamic team within our firm, with 67 lawyers, 38 contract managers and 13 paralegals globally.  This group provides comprehensive legal services and broad risk management support to our firm’s leadership, consultants and support staff throughout the world. The Immigration Legal team is currently comprised of two lawyers and one paralegal in New York, two paralegals in Atlanta and one lawyer in London.

You will will report directly to the lead Immigration Counsel and will work closely with the other members of the Immigration legal team specifically and the Legal Department generally as well as a range of other professionals within the firm (e.g., Office Immigration Contacts (“OICs”) Professional Development and Staffing professionals, Office and Sector leadership, all levels of HR, Mobility and Recruiting professionals, Corporate and Individual Tax professionals, local office leaders and administrators, as well as outside counsel (e.g.: immigration, employment and tax) worldwide.

What You'll Do

You will provide counsel on an array of immigration law issues across Latin America and the Caribbean, but may sometimes be asked to consider matters respecting foreign immigration legal concerns, working to ensure that McKinsey colleagues in our region maintain legal status pursuant to our Immigration laws. 

As the Associate General Counsel, you will advise on immigration issues triggered by new hires, transfers, secondments, extended employment, short term “project loans,” terminations and other events, collaborating routinely with Office Immigration Contacts (OICs), individual foreign nationals and other internal stakeholders (e.g. Recruiting, HR, Mobility, Tax, Learning, among others) in Latin America and globally to support the legal engagement of McKinsey personnel in our region.

You will also be responsible for reviewing thoroughly and signing as Firm representative, non-immigrant and immigrant petition and application filings to our region. Immigration and Citizenship Services, Dept of Labor, State Dept and possibly other government agencies. 

In addition, you will monitor material changes to the legal and/or enforcement environments respecting immigration law, developing recommendations for changes in our approach and researching and drafting communications to stakeholders accordingly. 

You will troubleshoot immigration emergencies (e.g., denial of entry at airport, denial of visa at consulate, rush transfers/project loans, unexpected lapse in employment authorization, or other urgent events. You will also participate in the development, drafting and interpretation of global immigration communications and policies.

You will be responsible for supervising the Immigration Legal team paralegals' execution of certain responsibilities, including preparation of informational materials, data collection, sharing information and administrative processes.
