Returning to McKinsey after two years at business school

– Happy New Year, everyone!

It’s been a while since I’ve written—over two years!—as I just returned to McKinsey after taking educational leave to pursue my MBA. These past two years were such a great opportunity to be a ‘student’ again—learning from my professors and classmates, and spending time thinking about the type of leader I hope to be and impact I hope to have. I spent my summer between school years as a business intern for the management team of the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. I learned a ton about hospital management through my various projects and got to spend time with all sorts of departments learning how the teams do their jobs— from the inpatient units to the operating rooms to the central sterilization area (cleaning and turning over of all surgical equipment!) and beyond. I think I was ‘bitten’ by the healthcare bug—and have been pursuing mostly healthcare work since my return to McKinsey. It’s such a dynamic industry with all sorts of unique challenges and I am inspired every day by the care providers with whom I work. I also was able to travel quite a bit over the past two years (my favorite!) including to Africa—working with a financial management start up in Accra, Ghana, and spending about two weeks exploring Kenya (including my first safari)—and hiking Machu Picchu in Peru. These were the trips of a lifetime and I will forever be thankful for the memories.

Hiking with my family

It has also been an exciting couple of months since my return to the firm this past summer. I’ve jumped back in as a senior associate and it has been awesome to see just how much the firm has evolved in the last two years. Most recently, I’ve been spending my time working with hospital clients across a range of topics. One of the best parts of my experience has been our team—all very experienced in the healthcare space— from which I’ve learned a ton about the dynamics facing hospitals today. In addition, all four of us are avid tennis players, which has been a blast. We try to play one night a week (8:30-10pm) and have a friendly competition going.

I just returned from two wonderful weeks of vacation over the holidays with friends and family. Despite having a very warm Christmas week in New England (see the hiking picture), I still managed a ski trip to Vermont (first trip of the season!) and am looking forward to many more.

Best wishes for a wonderful start to 2015!
