From medicine to consulting

I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria. After training as a medical doctor at Lagos State University, I went to the Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health for a master’s degree in global health and population.

After completing my degree, I spent time in the U.S. and Nigeria gaining experience in healthcare before finally settling in Nigeria to be closer to my family.

Before McKinsey, I spent about eight years working on healthcare delivery with private and public–sector organizations including, the Boston Children’s Hospital and the World Bank. I authored several papers and case studies on immunization and health systems and, over time, grew ready for a broader experience.

Joining McKinsey seemed like the best thing to do next because I was really keen on exploring a more business–oriented approach to solving the challenges of public health in Nigeria.

My first engagement saw me working with a client to redesign the supply chain system for public health commodities in the country. The current system was very expensive to run and there was a constant lack of medicines and commodities at health centers. I was excited for this rare opportunity to shape the supply chain from the ground up. A major part of our effort was engaging private sector operators to manage supply chain activities previously controlled by the government. I developed guidelines, and standard operating procedures for the new processes. I co–developed and delivered targeted trainings on supply chain management, training the government managers to oversee the new system. The changes we implemented are improving the availability of medicines and life–saving commodities. It was one of my best experiences at the firm.

Since then, I have tried new things in new sectors, including banking, economic development and infrastructure. I have enjoyed stretching myself, and I’m looking forward to further deepening my expertise in these areas. I have also worked with clients throughout Africa and the Middle East, combining my love for travel with my work, and shaping policies and programs that are changing the lives of millions of people.
