McKinsey Q&A: Patricia

– Meet Patricia, a senior capital productivity expert with our operations practice, based in Washington, D.C.:

Interviewer: What drew you to McKinsey?

Patricia: I used to work for a small consulting organization that occasionally worked with McKinsey teams. I was always very impressed with the quality of work and impact the McK teams delivered. When I decided to change jobs, my first step was exploring opportunities at McKinsey.

Interviewer: What was your background prior to joining the firm?

Patricia: I have a BSc in Mechanical Engineering and a MBA. I worked for more than 10 years in project management and 15 years in consulting before McK. Immediately before joining, I was the Vice President for Business Development for my former employer.

Interviewer: What has been your favorite project so far?

Patricia: It’s always the one I am working on now. This time, our team is supporting a multi-billion-dollar turn around that has incurred major cost overruns and schedule delays. I’m working very closely with the executive team and project leadership to close major organizational and governance gaps and address technical and execution challenges. I love it.

Interviewer: What advice would you give to candidates interviewing with McKinsey?

Patricia: Ask many questions about the firm’s culture, environment, career progression, work-life balance, etc. We are very proud of our firm and the operations practice, so we’re delighted to talk about it. We can discuss how to grow professionally in a place where everyone is super smart and still have time to enjoy personal time with our partners, kids, pets, etc.

Interviewer: How do you like to spend your free time?

Patricia: Running, cooking, and planning vacations with my family and friends.
