McKinsey Q&A: Luke

– Meet Luke, an associate in our Beijing office who joined after several years in high-tech. Luke holds a PhD in Applied Physics from Stanford University. After graduation, he launched his own start-up, then joined Cisco and Sharp, focusing on R&D of optoelectronics. He prides himself on innovation and has twelve U.S. patents pending or granted.

Interviewer: What is your favorite thing about McKinsey?

Luke: The strength of the relationships I've formed with my teammates, colleagues, and clients. The people are all smart AND nice, and it's so much fun to work with such high quality colleagues.

Interviewer: What surprised you the most about McKinsey, especially since you joined as an experienced hire?

Luke: I was surprised at how rejuvenating I find working on a different project every few months. Last month, I was in Shenzhen diagnosing supply chain inefficiencies for a consumer product company; this month, I am in Fujian on an internet study witnessing some of the most dynamic online marketing activities. I feel like a kid in a candy store!

Interviewer: What kind of support did you receive as you started?

Luke: My first manager spent extra time coaching me. He taught me some advanced Microsoft Excel functions and checked the logic behind my calculations. His patience and hands-on guidance helped me learn quickly and develop a successful financial model for our clients.
