Emerging Scholars – Maria, Booth School of Business

Prior to business school at Booth, I knew I wanted to transition from finance to consulting. I knew what consulting was at a high level, but I was a bit anxious about the unknowns. Would I really be able to make an impact? What type of work would I do? Could I manage the lifestyle? Which firm would be the right fit for me? When I saw the post on Booth’s career website about McKinsey’s Emerging Scholars program, I knew it would provide an incredible opportunity to learn more about consulting and McKinsey.

The program exceeded my expectations. I have formed strong relationships with my mentor, Alina, and many other consultants. I felt I could ask them all – especially Alina – any question on my mind. They were extremely helpful during the recruiting process and beyond.

I also met fellow, incoming MBA students at leading schools across the U.S. Many of them have become my close friends and several will be my colleagues this summer. Several of us formed interview prep groups across schools; it really felt like I had my own cheerleading squad during the fall recruiting season. We all rooted for each other – what an incredible support network.

Outside of the office and the classroom, I’m passionate about sports and giving back to the institutions that have given so much to me. I am particularly excited about my involvement with NU for Life; I mentor current student athletes as they explore the career opportunities ahead of them.
