Are you interested in learning more about career opportunities in the world of data science at McKinsey? We would like to invite women who are finishing or have completed their studies and developed their thesis in Advanced Analytics, Data Mining or Machine Learning (eg. Decision trees, support vector machines, clustering algorithms, graphs theory, neural networks, genetic algorithm, information theory, Bayesian methods). You are invited to the Milan office to discuss your thesis and you can win a job offer and a ticket to Open Data Science Conference in London from the 19th to the 22th of September (access to the VIP Lounge and VIP Networking Lunches is included). I joined McKinsey two years and half ago as the first Data Scientist of the Milan office, in this period I developed 12 projects in about 8 industries, always with different teams and clients.

I joined McKinsey originally to improve and apply my technical skills, but I found much more than that: thanks to daily feedbacks I also developed managerial, communication and consulting skills and I had the chance to learn how to build strong and trust–based relationships with team members and clients and to see how we can really create impact and value added.

I still remember when, at the end of a project, a manager initially skeptical confessed me: “I am really impressed by the work you have done. Seeing the results of these studies made me interested and proactive. We really should bring this transformation to all the other processes”. I also will never forget my last day on that project. The managers and senior clients prepared a surprised party for me: arriving in the office with a cake that had on the top a picture representing the machine learning model developed. In that occasion one senior client said to me: “We started to work together 6 months ago. I have to recognize your impressive professional growth and I have to thank you for the work done here. This meant a lot for our company. You can say that you have been the first to start this digital transformation”.

However, I would say that the most unexpected novelty is the team of 14 Data Scientists: I have seen them joining, one by one, the office. As new Data Scientists were arriving, they become part of our team that never lost its start–up nature. Now in this team you can find young friendly members that are used to spend time in bringing others on board, coaching them and supporting them when necessary, grateful for the environment they found in the Advanced Analytics Lab.
