In June 2025, McKinsey returned as the Knowledge Partner for Australian Energy Week (AEW), one of the energy sector's most significant annual conferences.
McKinsey’s energy leaders helped to shape the discussions across the AEW plenary about how to ensure an affordable, reliable and competitive transition to net zero. Mekala Krishnan delivered the International Keynote on the physical challenges of the energy transition and participated in the Cleantech Panel, while Victor Finkel moderated the CEO Panel, and Kate Smith led the Women in Energy Breakfast Panel.
Three key takeaways emerged from our discussions:
- The 'how' of energy transition is now the focus: With clarity on federal energy policy for the coming years, Australian leaders are well-positioned to capitalise on the transition. The conversation has shifted from "if" the transition will happen to "how" to tackle it collectively.
- Momentum is building, but cross-sector collaboration is key: The energy sector is making significant progress in its transition journey. However, the next challenge lies in extending this momentum to other sectors through innovative cross-sector collaborations.
- Understanding each challenge is crucial: Leaders must determine the nature of the challenges they are facing – some will require relentless execution and scaling, while others demand "capital I" innovation in systems and business models.
