Choose Your Path

Your future starts now

One of the first things you’ll hear is the expression “Make your own McKinsey”—it’s about the many options you’ll have to shape your career and follow your interests. While most of our new hires join us on a generalist track to build a diverse portfolio of work, we offer specialized entry tracks for candidates who are excited about digital or operations functions, as well as opportunities for life-science candidates who wish to work on a variety of healthcare topics. Many of our consultants choose to pursue a second academic degree, in particular an MBA or a PhD, an option that is supported by McKinsey.

The paths you can take

Generalist

In the generalist role, you’ll help our clients solve some of their most difficult problems. You will be exposed to a variety of industries and tackle issues in different functions. You’ll learn to take a top-management perspective and use an integrated approach that considers the organization as a whole as you develop fact-based recommendations. Roles for generalists are determined by experience and education.

Featured specialist paths

Operations

McKinsey’s Operations Practice helps our clients transform every aspect of their operations from customer service to manufacturing—and significantly improve their efficiency, productivity, quality, and agility. Operational excellence makes a decisive competitive difference for many of the world’s leading companies.

Digital

Consultants in the digital group share a passion for information technology. As a member of digital, your role will be similar to that of a generalist consultant, but your mix of projects will be different. You will have the opportunity to work on topics such as big data, agile methodologies, cloud computing, cybersecurity, analytics, and digital transformation.

Life Sciences

We offer many fascinating opportunities for life-science graduates, such as working on R&D or marketing issues in the pharmaceutical industry or maybe developing a healthcare strategy for a country. Consulting with McKinsey is a real “hands on” learning environment to grow and expand your knowledge and skills while being a part of a dynamic network of diverse colleagues who will enrich your development.

Training and development

We want you to get off to the best possible start, and we want to support your development throughout your journey with McKinsey. With us, you will find a wide variety of training programs designed to help you develop the skills you need to succeed in your consulting career. You’ll gain a deeper knowledge of your chosen industries and management topics through research, global conferences, and client work. In addition, we operate as one global firm, making it easy for you to work internationally and develop a network around the world—if that’s what you want to do. Many of our consultants choose to pursue a second academic degree, in particular an MBA or a PhD, an option that is supported by McKinsey.

Flexibility

Like any fast-track career, working at McKinsey can be intense. Our clients rely on us during their most challenging times, and we go to great lengths to exceed their expectations. But meeting our commitments doesn’t mean putting our personal needs and interests on hold. More than 30 percent of our consultants choose flexible working models to find a balance and lead a fulfilling life.
