Stuart joined McKinsey after a long and successful career leading the risk and compliance functions at two major financial institutions. He brings clients depth of expertise on topics such as the legal and regulatory requirements for financial services, regulatory engagement, compliance culture and policy, corporate governance, tech-enabled innovation in compliance systems, and organizational redesign.
Before joining McKinsey, Stuart was Chief Compliance Officer of two major financial services providers for 20 years. He was a managing director, chief compliance officer, and senior advisor at Morgan Stanley, where he ultimately headed a thousand-strong team (including Global Financial Crimes), led complex cross-divisional projects, including the development of a “three lines of defense” operating model, and collaborated with the IT group to overhaul compliance systems and introduce innovative technologies. He also advised the legal and compliance management team on division-wide strategic initiatives, including leading an organizational redesign. At Credit Suisse First Boston/Credit Suisse, Stuart, as the first global head of compliance, led the creation of a globally coordinated compliance program and was a member of the senior management team that reorganized the company to, among other things, improve compliance leadership and management.
Stuart graduated with a JD from the Columbia University School of Law, an AB from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University and is a member of the New York State Bar Association. In his spare time, he chairs the board of overseers at Bard College at Simon’s Rock, a liberal-arts college, and is on the board of trustees of the Olana Partnership, a not-for-profit heritage organization.
