About Stewart

Stewart leads McKinsey’s Operations Practice in sub-Saharan Africa, providing expertise in operational improvement across sectors, including mining, banking, and service industries. He is also a member of the leadership team of our global Mining Practice.

An advisor to mining and commodities companies, Stewart helps executives improve their operations, with a focus on organization, procurement, supply chain, and competitiveness.

Stewart's recent work:

  • leading the development of the first “model mine” facility in sub-Saharan Africa and co-creator of MineLens, a global operational and cost-benchmarking initiative
  • creating and implementing comprehensive mining diagnostics and operational-transformation programs in South America, India, Europe, South Africa, the Middle East, and North America
  • setting an end-to-end supply-chain strategy for a global gold-mining company
  • developing a fact-based study of the global competitiveness of the South African mining sector across multiple commodities

Before joining McKinsey, Stewart was a professor of physics at the University of Pretoria. He was also rewarded an Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral research fellowship.
