As soon as I get comfortable in my role, it shifts in a way that push me outside of my comfort zone, forcing me to grow and develop at an astounding pace.
Working toward my PhD, I realized academia was not the career for me in the long term. After spending some time reflecting on the attributes I wanted to incorporate into a career and investigating the options available, I decided that McKinsey would offer me the best opportunity to realize my goals. Since joining, I've found that the firm has offered me the chance to work on challenging problems across a broad variety of industries, in a team environment, and surrounded by incredible people who take feedback and development as seriously as the work itself.
Amazing growth, true friends
In just 20 months, I have been constantly struck by the opportunities to grow. Professionally, I have had extensive exposure to a variety of industries, including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, corporate and consumer banking, advanced materials, global health, and energy. I have been able to work hand-in-hand with clients and lead their teams through some of their more challenging situations. On a more personal note, I have incredible connections with my colleagues―they are some of my truest and most meaningful friends.
Impact on society
One of my most rewarding and significant experiences at McKinsey has been working in the social sector, where the end goal of our work was to enable our clients to have greater impact in reducing morbidity and mortality from communicable diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. It has also been gratifying to form deep bonds with clients by working with them during some of their tumultuous times.
If you join McKinsey
You should explore career and extracurricular activities broadly and as early as possible. A range of experiences will provide a baseline for better understanding the career options that would be most interesting to pursue. These experiences will no doubt prove to be valuable regardless of the career path you decide to follow.
