Phase 2: Validating the opportunity
After the diagnostic, McKinsey launched four teams to focus on some of the largest cost savings opportunities. These teams had three primary missions:

  • Validate the ideas generated in the diagnostic

  • Generate and analyze additional productivity-enhancing ideas through brainstorming sessions with the client's workforce

  • Develop overarching themes to sustain operational improvements leveraging McKinsey's expertise in areas such as lean manufacturing and supply chain management

  • Develop implementation plans for major ideas

The teams found as they worked with the units that many great ideas existed throughout the corporation but had never been given a structured and thorough analysis. Using McKinsey's experience in structuring and analyzing tough problems, the client was able to uncover significant potential improvements.
