| McKinsey’s West Coast consultants reflect a broad range of backgrounds. While some join us with M.B.A. degrees and business experience, others arrive with advanced professional degrees in non-business disciplines such as computer science, law, and medicine.

Favourite engagement? I have two favorites: a cosmetics strategy for a major high-end retailer and a retail concept design and strategy for a major technology player
Client focus: Retail, sales and marketing
Fun fact: I cycled from Boston to St. Louis in less than three weeks-and covered 330 miles in the last three days

Background: M.D., Johns Hopkins University; B.S., Duke University
What do you like about San Francisco office? Each person brings a different background and set of interests to the office. On any given day, you can learn the most interesting things by just getting to know everyone working around you. I have truly never met or worked with a more impressive and engaging group of people than those at McKinsey
Client focus: Health care (payor/provider/medical devices/biotech/pharmaceutical)
Fun fact: I enjoy playing lots of different sports badly with the most spectacular wipeouts while snowboarding and kiteboarding. I also search the city for the best burritos and try to find ways to bicycle around the city without going up and down all the hills

Laura, Principal
Background: Ph.D., Stanford University; A.B., Harvard University
What makes McKinsey a rewarding environment? The people and the diversity of experiences! I came to McKinsey eight years ago thinking it would be a good way to get a business education, but I have loved both my colleagues and my clients so much that I have never looked back. I have also been amazed by how flexible the firm has been around my personal needs at various times in my career. I belong to an executive mommy's play group, and I am one of the few working mothers who can actually take time off on a Wednesday to attend my daughter's ballet recital
Client focus: Health care (PMP), focused on competitive strategy, operations, and R&D for biotech, pharmaceutical and medical device companies
Fun fact: I just taught my four-yr-old daughter to "dive" into the pool (more like a kamikaze belly flop with lots of giggles on the way down). I love nothing more than getting dirty in the garden planting/harvesting fruits and veggies with my daughter

Jonathan, Engagement Manager
Background: M.Eng., MIT; B.S., MIT
What was it like joining McKinsey as an experienced hire? I think that you can always find places where people are passionate about their work, but what really struck about McKinsey is the passion for our people. The firm really takes its dual mission for both our clients and colleagues very seriously. Although we definitely work hard, we all make a conscious effort to make sure we are constantly developing as problem solvers, as advisers, and as people
Client focus: High tech, telecom, media
Fun fact: In my free time, I usually just hang out with my fiance

Meredith, Business Analyst
Background: B.E., Dartmouth College; B.A., Dartmouth College
What is it like learning in an apprenticeship model? As an analyst, the largest challenge I had was my lack of experience. Within a few months at the firm, I had already begun to have the experiences that most people do not have until they reach senior roles in many industries. This kind of exposure to key decision makers while taking a role in an entire client engagement from start to finish has helped me not only to learn more quickly but also to have more confidence in my abilities and better awareness of how I can work to improve
Client focus: Pharmaceuticals, health care payor/provider, global health
Fun fact: I love snowboarding, cooking, photography, and traveling. My favorite sport to compete in is pole vaulting, and my favorite sports to watch are baseball and hockey

Lareina, Associate Principal
Background: M.A., Columbia University; B.A., Columbia University
How do you balance work and life? Since 2002, when my first son was born, I have prioritized on working for local clients. I often have breakfast or dinner with the kids and we use the weekends to recharge and have fun
Client focus: High tech, strategy
Fun fact: I started McKinsey as a BA in the Greater China Office and had several "dream" engagements where I got to use my background in public policy and economics! After that I was hooked. I have two wonderful kids—ages five and two; they are my inspiration and greatest joy. They think the best part of their mom working at McKinsey is the unlimited supply of apple juice in the office fridge and the fantastic view of San Francisco
