The Venture business plan competition , jointly organized by the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich and McKinsey Switzerland, gives people or teams the opportunity to develop a professional business plan. Successful teams are encouraged to start their own business. Venture offers entrants coaching from experienced industrialists and venture capitalists, information meetings, and workshops.
Venture 2008 builds on the success of Venture 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006. The participation is not limited to members of universities and colleges but is open to all young entrepreneurs in Switzerland. The supporting program has been expanded to include investor days, where teams present their business idea to potential investors, representing more than CHF 6.5 billion of investment funds. Venture 2006 generated more than 200 business ideas and 100 full-fledged business plans. Overall, the Venture competitions have led to the founding of more than 175 new companies, creating some 1,700 new jobs.
To support innovative, fast-growing start-up companies with seed money, coaching, and network contacts, the Venture Incubator was set up in 2001 by McKinsey, the ETH Zurich, and ten major Swiss companies (ABB, Credit Suisse, Hilti, Nestlé, Novartis, Pictet, Schindler, Sulzer, Suva, and the ZKB).
The Venture Incubator manages an investment fund of CHF 101 million, and investors represent ten blue-chip enterprises from industry and finance.
McKinsey Switzerland is one of the founding members of "Avenir Suisse," an independent Swiss think tank established in 2000. The idea of the foundation is to stimulate discussion of new ideas and develop innovative solutions to social, political, and business issues in Switzerland.
