Key Industry/Functional Practices - Electronics and High Tech
Client Challenge
A large global information technology services company engaged a Stamford-based McKinsey team to understand how it could expand within the rapidly growing IT services market.

The team, working closely with a range of client executives, explored a variety of potential new services, and identified areas with anticipated growth in the future. In order to offer these new services, the team determined that the client would need to substantially increase its internal staff, make targeted acquisitions, and establish alternate business models with customers. The team translated these strategies into specific actions, including steps to create a new organization.

Based on this work, client executives established a new internal service group, which began its operations immediately.

Practice Support
Over the past five years, the firm has served over 60 percent of the largest electronic companies in the world, including clients in the semiconductor, software and services, hardware, and Internet (e.g., hardware and software that supports the Internet) industries.

"It's exhilarating to work in an environment undergoing rapid change. The high tech industry has undergone the largest down-turn in history, but there are still important strategic opportunities."
