Opportunities for Learning

Professional development here is characterized by a steep learning curve, spurred by continual career opportunities, and nurtured by a supportive culture.

We like to say "there is never a dull moment" when you join McKinsey. When you start to feel comfortable with the problem solving techniques and client team work, you will advance to meet new challenges, such as leading an engagement and inspiring the development of your team members, including client team members.

As you develop, you will contribute to global thought leadership in your area of expertise and interest through one of McKinsey's practices, our term for knowledge-focused service groups. Before you know it, you will be eligible to become a member of the global partner group that owns and leads the firm.

McKinsey's vast network of global offices also provides opportunities for international assignments.

An important pillar of professional growth at McKinsey is on-the-job training in an intensive team environment.

Coaching
McKinsey places great emphasis on training our leaders to develop the people with whom they work. A large amount of valuable learning emerges from real-time coaching and feedback.

Engagements
When assigning individuals to engagements, we take existing skills as well as development needs into account. This ensures that your assignments match your skills and that you have the opportunity for the broadest possible exposure and experience.

Feedback
Everyone gets formal and informal feedback. We've found that ongoing, immediate feedback, delivered in an environment of trust and mutual support, provides the most valuable opportunities for consultants at all levels to learn and grow. Your engagement manager, colleagues, office mates, fellow team members, and McKinsey partners all provide constructive feedback… and you are expected to coach and counsel others in return.

Mentoring
Every consultant is assigned a McKinsey partner as a Development Group Leader (DGL), a professional mentor to provide advice and help shape career direction and professional growth. The DGL role is one of the most important support structures at McKinsey. Your DGL takes an active role in following your progress and is present during your semi-annual professional reviews. Your DGL will also advise you on your development, helping you to make the choices that are right for you.

Knowledge Development
You are also encouraged to take part in our internal research activities that keep us at the forefront of management thinking. (e.g., McKinsey Global Institute or the McKinsey Practice Olympics).
