How do we define entrepreneurship?
Within our office, people are expected, inspired, and provided support to pursue their passions. People have influence over the kinds of projects they work on, the people they work with, and the areas of knowledge and firm building where they want to leave a distinctive mark.
How do we support it?
The leaders of our office create the opportunity for each person to "create his or her own McKinsey." Associates and business analysts are given many opportunities to lead both at the client site and within the office, and their leadership contributions are rewarded in the evaluation process. Most important, our partners inspire us to stretch in new ways through their own actions. The success of our partners in building new offices, practices, and services is the beacon that guides us in our own pursuits.
How is this entrepreneurial spirit reflected?
Geographically, Detroit, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh locations grew out of the business-building vision of our own consultants. Many of our practices exist thanks to the efforts of our associates. On a smaller scale, our many community-oriented efforts, such as the Cleveland location "River Day" (a community service river cleaning event), the Chicago location’s work with Crispus Attucks Academy (a public elementary school) and the office's mentorship program, resulted from personal inspiration and conviction.
The most compelling manifestation of our entrepreneurship, however, may be in the lives of our own people.
Two of our associates dedicated 3 months of nights and weekends to help a major nonprofit organization map out a course for its financial survival.
Two other associates have worked regularly to find new Healthcare Payor and Provider clients that need the business principles McKinsey can bring.
An associate who saw an opportunity to develop a new source of exceptional people personally drove the expansion of the office's presence on the campus of Ohio State University.
Every person in our office has his or her own story of initiative-taking – look for these as a true indication of our commitment to entrepreneurship.
