Building Better Products - How We Work

Project Objective
Design a product development system to create consistently exciting, high-quality products.

Background
The vice president of product development for a major automotive client felt a desperate need to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the product development process. He was particularly concerned that his engineers were not able to predict which designs would have inconsistent quality and low consumer appeal.

He engaged McKinsey to work closely with the company engineers to solve the problem. The joint team had three broad aims: 1) identify and analyze root causes; 2) develop a practical solution for improving the process, and; 3) translate that solution into an institutional system for the product development organization.
