Though some might be inclined to think that every McKinsey consultant has an M.B.A. and a background in business, our consultants come from all walks of life. Many arrive with advanced degrees in law, medicine, or a host of other disciplines.
A consultant at McKinsey takes on several roles over time. Everyone's path is different, but everyone contributes to the team's problem solving and client management activities from day one.
Associate (with a tenure of 0-3 years)
Associates generally take responsibility for driving one or more work areas on a project. Typically, each associate will also lead a group of client team members.
Engagement Manager
At 2-4 years tenure, consultants generally take on the "EM" role and assume day-to-day responsibility for managing the overall project, including the interaction between the client managers and the team.
Associate Principal
At approximately 4-5 years tenure, associate principals take on partner-like roles. These roles include managing relations with senior client team members, thought leadership, and client development. They also have leadership responsibilities within McKinsey's offices.
