There are many theories surrounding the origin of the name "Chicago." Derived from the language of the native Americans who inhabited the area, the word refers to something strong, great, and powerful.
Chicago's strength is reflected in its history. The City of Big Shoulders has been a metropolis of progress and transformation since its humble beginnings on the shores of Lake Michigan.
Not long after its incorporation, Chicago was home to the first skyscraper, a nine-story structure, in 1885. Today that reputation for innovation is thriving and can be seen in city’s architecture, universities and music. Chicago also sets global standards in its sport teams and in various cultural events, including world-renowned theatre and art.
From stockyards to stock exchanges, Chicago has always been the center of business and commerce. Standing at the crossroads of rail, air, and highway traffic, the city is home to some of the world’s largest public and private companies. A center for conventions housed in the nation’s largest exhibit hall, Chicago has also been host to more political conventions than any other U.S. city.
The diversity of Chicago’s people can be found throughout this City of Neighborhoods. Chicagoans are rightfully proud of the range of cultures found in its streets. And the natural beauty that attracted the original residents to the area can still be seen throughout the city in beautiful parks, lakefront beaches, and botanical gardens.
