Chennai (formerly Madras), is the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. A coastal metropolis, Chennai is gaining a reputation as one of the largest exporters of software, information technology, and information-technology-enabled services (ITES) in the country. A major chunk of India's car manufacturing industry is also based in and around the city. Chennai is becoming a hub for other sectors as well, such as hardware manufacturing and healthcare.
Culturally, Chennai is an important centre for Carnatic music - one of two forms of classical Indian music - and Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form. But it's not just classical culture that Chennai is known for. There's also Kollywood — the heart of the Tamil film industry, which churns out more than 150 films a year, and is the place where the Slumdog Millionaire composer A. R. Rahman began his career.
Chennai offers a wealth of activities in your leisure time:
- Take a sunset stroll on the 12 km-long Marina beach, which runs along the city's shoreline.
- Shop for mulberry silk in the crowded markets of George Town, or spend a free day driving along East Coast Road, a new sea-front highway dotted with luxury malls, historic cultural sites, and amusement parks.
- Drive an hour outside Chennai to visit the ancient shore temple of Mahabalipuram — a gem of classical South Indian architecture.
