Transforming public health in India: The Public Health
Foundation of India (PHFI) is an innovative, first-of-its-kind, public/private
initiative that aspires to substantially strengthen the public health system in
India. For more than two years, McKinsey consultants driven by sheer personal
interest and commitment to the cause played an active role in taking an idea
from conception and actually giving birth to it.
The need has long been felt given the serious public health challenges facing
India: rising disease rates; the resurgence of communicable and non-communicable
diseases like diabetes, cancer; and the emergence of other health burdens like
injuries from accidents.
Working
actively with multiple stakeholders,
the team played an instrumental role in diagnosing the need for such an
effort and helped evolve the concept. Further we sought alignment across multiple stakeholder groups in
India and globally, led the private fund raising effort, and
provided project management and execution support. PHFI was born in March 2006, when it was
launched by the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh.
The
Foundation's charter includes:
- Establishing five to seven new institutes of public
health.
- Assisting existing institutes to enhance their
capacity and output.
- Promoting research in prioritised areas of public
health to inform policy and empower programmes.
- Facilitating policy development, programme
evaluation, and advocacy on public health related issues.
- Enabling the development of standards and adoption of a credible
accreditation system for public health courses.
