Our Work - McKinsey Global Institute

Examples of Our Research

McKinsey Global Institute The McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) is McKinsey & Company's economics research arm. MGI's mission is to help business and government leaders develop a deeper understanding of the evolution of the global economy and provide a fact base that contributes to decision making on critical management and policy issues.

MGI's work is a unique combination of two distinct disciplines: economics and management. Economists often have limited access to the practical problems facing senior mangers, while senior mangers often lack the time and incentive to look beyond their own industry to the larger issues of the global economy.

The merger of disciplines at the heart of our approach is reflected in our research process. To draw from the best economic thinking, our research teams work with a number of leading economists, including Nobel laureates. Under the leadership of MGI director Diana Farrell and our senior fellows, each research project includes a team of McKinsey consultants from around the world and is supported by the firm's network of industry and management experts.

Our current research agenda seeks to derive perspectives that help inform the global forces shaping business and society, from demography and technology to consumer preferences and regulation. We seek to understand these forces from a supply perspective that explores the integration of product, labor, capital, and resource markets, and from the demand perspectives of households and consumers.

Our work has spanned many topics including country productivity studies, the relationship between IT and productivity, global economic integration, the ascendance of China and India, labor markets and offshoring, capital markets, health care, global energy demand, demographics, and consumer demand.

MGI’s current China research focuses on the impact of urbanization, energy resource demands, financial system development and capital markets, income distribution and consumer markets, and comparative perspectives with India.
