Deepa - Engagement Manager Mike - Associate

Jocy

Business Analyst

What prompted you to investigate a career in consulting?

Having studied Biochemistry at university, I wanted a career that built upon the analytical skills I had developed throughout my course, with the chance to work with like-minded people. I was not really sure which direction to move in, but consulting offered new challenges and seemed to provide a good foundation wherever my future takes me.

What have you gained from working at McKinsey - what training and support have you received since starting?

Within each project that you become a part of, every member of your team is happy to invest time in helping you learn and develop, no matter how busy they are. The feedback culture that exists means that it’s easy to know where you are doing well and where there’s room for improvement, and those around you are happy to support you to address those needs. Several months after my first project, I still catch up with my old Engagement Manager for lunch to discuss which direction makes the most sense for my development, and he’s more than happy to advise. Even people that you don’t know within the firm offer support when you reach out to them, within the London office as well as globally- McKinsey has a fantastic network.

Besides learning on-the-job, there’s a schedule of regular training sessions, and the chance to invest in training within areas that interest you, such as strategy or finance. The support that exists enables you to really make the most out of your time with the firm.

What has been your greatest moment of satisfaction while at McKinsey?

I had the privilege on my first project to look after an entire client group, and help facilitate their discussions towards a recommendation for healthcare transformation in the area. Seeing a group of individuals come together as a team over the course of the project, with their initially reserved client lead growing in confidence as the process developed and to finish with them wholeheartedly co-presenting their recommendations to a workshop of over 200 clinicians was a fantastic moment.

What has been your biggest challenge while at McKinsey?

When I started at McKinsey, I found it difficult to have the confidence to engage with senior clients. With support from my project teams, as well as coaching sessions to develop my soft skills, I find it easier to talk to them and build rapport.

Is McKinsey what you expected? What has been your biggest surprise here?

McKinsey has met my expectations and more. Everyone I met throughout the recruitment process was open and honest about what to expect from life as a consultant; the type of work we do, the hours, what the people are like. It is a fantastic culture, full of sharp, intelligent, diverse individuals, and perhaps the biggest surprise to me is how collaborative it is, rather than competitive. Everyone takes an active part in supporting you throughout your time here- it is a great community.

How did you decide to accept your offer from McKinsey?

McKinsey stood out to me in the recruitment process compared to the other consultancy firms I’d applied to. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the interviews, and everyone I met seemed excited by the work that they did. Everyone I met seemed set on helping bring out the best in me, rather than wanting to catch me out, and I was offered feedback at each stage so that I had the opportunity to improve. Combined with the reputation of the Firm globally, there was no better choice for me.

What are your long term goals?

I look forward to using the next couple of years as a Business Analyst to make the most of my time at McKinsey and to explore the opportunities that are available. I am not sure what career I will end up in, but I hope it is similar to the experience I have now, whether that be at McKinsey leading teams or using the skills I develop at the firm to aid another opportunity. It is great to wake up in the morning knowing that I have work that engages me, surrounded by people I get on with who create a positive and rewarding working environment, and that even at this early stage I can deliver client impact.
