Business Analyst

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in learning about our world and the forces that shape it. While studying to be a software engineer at the University of Waterloo, I developed an appetite for the business world, which eventually led me to apply to McKinsey. My background illustrates one of my favorite things about McKinsey—the breadth of people’s backgrounds and interests. I can always learn something new by striking up a conversation with one of my colleagues.

McKinsey is a nonstop learning environment

One of the most impressive things about McKinsey is the number of learning opportunities at your fingertips. While serving clients, you become well versed in various industries and business functions, and this exposure allows you to quickly become an expert in the work you are doing and the challenges we are helping our clients overcome. In addition to this work-related knowledge, you also learn from the people that surround you during a study—both other McKinsey consultants and the clients we serve. Developing strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication skills is vital in today’s world, and McKinsey provides an environment for this type of growth.

You live the firm’s values every day

McKinsey’s core values are intertwined with its culture. From putting the client’s interests first to attracting and retaining the best people, we practice our values day in and day out. On a study, my team will often pause while problem solving to ask ourselves if what we are doing is in the best interest of our client. The client impact we aspire to deliver requires a very high standard of professionalism. With this in mind, McKinsey consultants actively support and develop one another through mentorship and coaching. I receive daily feedback from teammates pointing out where I’ve succeeded and providing specific suggestions on how I can improve.

Jump-starting your career

As a business analyst, you have the opportunity to leave the firm after two or three years, which encourages you to seek out different experiences that will enrich you both as a person and as a professional. Whether you choose to return to McKinsey or pursue other opportunities, you will have the best possible footing for your future.
