"Working in the BTO enables me to develop both my business consulting skills and my IT management knowledge. Bridging the gap between business and IT is often the biggest challenge the client faces in our projects."

Introducing McKinsey's Business Technology Office

Who we are

McKinsey’s Business Technology Office (BTO) is a global entrepreneurial community of almost 700 consultants with a passion for technology and helping clients to use it to create business value. Serving on technology-related as well as general consulting projects, our people grow to become senior executive counselors fluent in one of the most important strategic levers of today and tomorrow.

  • McKinsey’s Business Technology Office currently has almost 700 consultants working from some 60 locations in around 30 countries worldwide
  • Our clients include over two-thirds of the global Fortune 100 companies
  • In the Benelux, we are a team of some 25 consultants working in the BTO, serving 20 of the 25 largest companies locally

How we work

At the BTO, we are passionately committed to enhancing business strategy with technological knowledge to bring about extraordinary innovation, create step-function improvements in operations, open up dialogues with new customers and generate new revenue streams.

Our consultants work closely with CEOs, CIOs, and other senior executives on technology-related strategy issues (so we don’t carry out implementation work, for example). We combine a top-management approach and strong project leadership skills with full independence and objectivity.

Examples of BTO projects

Smart metering
Demand for energy is outstripping supply. However, building a new power station is not only expensive; it is also at odds with the EU target of becoming 20% more energy-efficient by 2020. Introducing smart metering to clients can shift energy usage away from peak times and reduce overall consumption. But how do you implement such an innovation while serving two million unpredictable customers? What new business opportunities present themselves? And what are the costs and risks involved?

E-payments
Two e-payments companies each provide a unique portfolio of web-payment solutions and are considering a potential merger. How do they decide which services to continue to deliver after the merger and which ones to phase out? Would it make sense to merge (some of) the solutions offered by the two companies? How would this affect the merger negotiations?

A career with McKinsey's Business Technology Office

The BTO is part of McKinsey...

...with a technology focus

  •  We work in the same way as generalist McKinsey consultants
  • On most projects we work together with generalist consultants
  • The BTO is located in the same buildings and participates in the same recruiting, training, and social events
  • BTO and generalist consultants have similar profiles and are selected and evaluated in the same way
  •  The BTO focuses on clients and business issues with significant IT implications...
  • ...but we still spend a lot of time working on generalist projects to develop cross-functional knowledge
  • The BTO organizes additional technology-focused training and knowledge-sharing initiatives for its consulants
  • BTO candidates need technological experience or a deep interest in technology

Our people

Diversity drives us! We have over 100 citizenships and speak more than 120 languages in the BTO. And our consultants have a wide range of educational backgrounds and work experience.

We look for strong personalities: people who speak up and take responsibility from the start. The career track in the BTO is structured in the same way as that of our generalist consultants and is identical across all our locations.

Our client work

The scope of our work is as varied as the clients we serve. In addition, we encourage our consultants to gain general management experience by joining generalist McKinsey projects without a technology focus. In fact, BTO consultants typically spend more than half of their time working on topics like operations, organization, corporate finance, or marketing and sales.

Whatever the work, we provide the knowledge and insight that produces tangible impact at the highest levels!
