The primary focus of Joseph’s work is large-scale operational transformations, covering all types of improvement work, such as frontline operations, procurement, and spend reduction, capital-project optimisation, overhead cost reduction, and culture change.
Joseph works with client executives and line managers to identify areas for significant performance improvement and to help their companies attain goals through operational and strategic programs. He routinely works with clients on implementation to deliver bottom-line results, often with a heavy focus on building the capabilities of senior leaders so that they can sustain and extend results.
Joseph is committed to innovation in regard to the way McKinsey works with clients. He cofounded McKinsey Implementation and is currently leading McKinsey’s global research on success factors in a company's implementation performance—testing what specific behaviours and capabilities are most closely correlated with financial out-performance.
In his work with clients, Joseph brings expertise from a variety of industries: metals, mining, infrastructure, industrials, retail, telecommunications, and banking.
Examples of Joseph's recent client work include:
- leading a multiyear transformation for a mining client, conducting diagnostic work on opportunities to improve volume and reduce costs and working with the client on a multisite implementation effort that delivered more than A$500 million in bottom-line savings
- undertaking an 18-month operational-improvement effort with a retail client; conducting a comprehensive diagnostic to prioritise opportunities and delivering A$200 million in cost reductions via an implementation and improvement coaching partnership
- developing a productivity strategy with a banking client, identifying a A$400 million profit-improvement opportunity and developing the road map and governance for the implementation of a series of projects
Joseph is a Fulbright Scholar, and he completed his MBA at Harvard Business School. Prior to joining McKinsey he held a variety of legal positions, predominantly in corporate and contract law.
