Transitioning from being a Navy fighter pilot to a business professional presented a unique challenge for me, and McKinsey provided the best possible solution. Despite my non-business background, we each had something to offer. I could contribute leadership experience, structured thinking in high-pressure situations, and proven people management skills. In turn, McKinsey could provide unparalleled mentorship and coaching, broad exposure to industries and functions, and meaningful challenges to apply my previous and newly-acquired skills. It was a perfect match—especially given my non-traditional background.
Unwavering support and opportunities
I discovered an unexpected passion for topics in consumer behavior, particularly in retail, and McKinsey has provided unwavering support to help me pursue that passion. With a decade of military aviation experience, it would have been easy to direct me into the government / defense or aerospace industry. To the contrary, McKinsey provided opportunities to explore several industries and functions to find my passion. The Professional Development team and McKinsey leadership across the West Coast have, without exception, provided guidance and support as I pursue the path that inspires me.
Tackling complex challenges with exceptionally diverse people
My McKinsey experience has developed how I think—whether solving a business problem or deciding how to spend the weekend with my family. At McKinsey, we consistently challenge each other to find what really matters through structured thought and collaboration. The firm also has an exceptionally diverse set of people, both clients and colleagues. Despite our different backgrounds, we have tackled complex challenges together, generally at an accelerated pace. We’re able to work well together because of the firm’s approach to structured problem-solving and engagement management.
