I explored a number of career options (both in business and engineering) before ultimately deciding on McKinsey. I joined the firm for several reasons. I believed that this was the best place for me to achieve my full potential professionally, explore my passion for the healthcare industry by working with leading biotech/pharma companies on their most challenging commercial issues, serve clients both in the US and internationally and work with a truly diverse, talented and dynamic group of individuals.
Finding a stellar peer group
I was most surprised by the extent of collaboration at McKinsey. From the outside, I had a very false perception of McKinsey as being quite competitive. This could not be further from the truth. From my very first day here, my peers have proven to be invaluable sources of learning, coaching, and support. Having a peer group who I truly respect, admire and can turn to for advice has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this job and one of the things that make McKinsey truly unique. Some of the friends I have made at McKinsey are friends who I will have for life.
Developing critical thinking and analytic skills
Professionally, my time at McKinsey has helped me develop the critical thinking and analytical skills that I can broadly apply to break down and ultimately solve any problem I am facing. Perhaps even more importantly, I have also learned how to communicate in a clear and concise manner and how to influence and lead teams—skills that really set McKinsey consultants apart.
Making my own McKinsey
Personally, McKinsey has taught me that there are a number of different paths and approaches that all lead to both professional success and personal fulfillment. We take the motto of “Make your own McKinsey” very seriously and I think it is a powerful lesson that can be applied to life in general.
