About Sanjay
Sanjay Kalavar is a principal in McKinsey’s Houston office where he focuses on working with energy companies and private equity firms. He leads the firm’s practice in managing operational risks for energy companies. He also co-leads the firm’s work in managing other risks such as commercial and regulatory risks in the energy sector. Examples of his recent work include:
- Establishing a program to revise and implement new engineering, operational and safety standards for a large North American utility
- Building a safety and operational risk management organization for a international oil and gas company
- Assessing the way that contractors are managed to minimize operational risks for a multinational energy company
- Determining roles and people critical to managing safety for a large upstream drilling and completions organization
- Redesigning the enterprise risk management processes for an oil and gas company
- Developing a turnaround and risk management plan for an energy trading business
- Conducting due diligence on a fuel logistics company
- Developing a long term energy demand forecast for a large US city
Sanjay first joined McKinsey in New York and rejoined the firm in 2005 after a several-year leave of absence. During his time away from McKinsey, Sanjay worked as a private equity investor at General Atlantic Partners in Greenwich, CT. He also worked in Peru for Technoserve, a not-for-profit firm focused on building agricultural businesses in the developing world.
Sanjay graduated from the University of Virginia with a BA in Economics. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Sanjay lives in Houston with his wife and 3 children. In his spare time, he coaches soccer and basketball, and serves on the boards of KIPP Houston public schools and Venture for America.
