My story starts when I discovered my passion for technology, particularly using it to enable equitable access to information. I see myself pursuing opportunities at the intersection of technology, operations, and the public sector. McKinsey is the ideal environment to bring this passion to life.
Throughout my career, I have tried to get exposure to a variety of different functional roles in technology. I worked in software development, product marketing, and business development roles for high-tech companies. Then I changed my focus to technology as it relates to operations, and parlayed this experience into entrepreneurial roles consulting with technology startups on market entry strategies in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa.
At home in technology
As I started to think about my next step, I wanted an environment that provided a wide variety of work in the areas that excited me, and a strong apprenticeship model and commitment to my development. I also wanted to work with an organization that has impact at the highest levels of leadership, and encourages teamwork with independent problem-solving ownership. Finally, I wanted to be with colleagues I enjoyed and with whom I connected. I found all of these things at McKinsey.
As a member of the Business Technology Practice, I have a community of colleagues who share similar technology interests, and I have been able to take advantage of a variety of project opportunities. I have helped a telecommunications client to improve operations and marketing efficiency, a satellite communications client on growth and market entry strategies, a public sector financial institution on large-scale technology transformation, and a charter school on infusing technology to enable next-generation learning. In the future I plan to pursue international project opportunities as well.
A focus on my development
McKinsey is helping me reach my full potential by being laser-focused on professional development. There is formal and informal support throughout the organization. Partners always have time for feedback sessions. Conversations often start with “What are you interested in? How can I help you be successful?” Various members of the firm, from the people who work in our professional development group to associates, engagement managers, and partners have helped me refine the executive-level influencing and decision-making skills that are needed to make organizational transformations sustainable.
