I studied engineering because I always felt passionate about solving challenges and building things. I discovered my passion for energy while working at a small exploration and production company in my native Buenos Aires, Argentina. After finishing my MBA degree I joined McKinsey because I felt that it would allow me to deepen my knowledge of the global energy industry very quickly.
A highlight of my professional career
My second study at McKinsey involved supporting an oil company in rethinking its upstream portfolio and long-term strategy. I basically had the opportunity to do what I was doing at the Argentine E&P company, but for an international company. How do you go from working for a company that produces five thousand barrels per day to doing it for one that produces millions? I worked with the global VP for strategy, learning how to optimize a global portfolio, how to allocate capital across it, and how to set up senior leadership strategy discussions.
It was a great experience and my primary contribution was creating a model that showed the economic outcomes of investment decisions. When I caught up with one of my clients from that study two years ago she told me they were still using the model!
The next two years allowed me to broaden my knowledge of the energy industry, serving oilfield services firms, upstream and downstream units, and petrochemical companies. I also developed experience in diverse geographies, working for companies in Australia, Switzerland, the UK, and US.
