Back to Careers in the UK

I joined McKinsey after completing my degree in economics at the University of Cambridge. I wanted to develop myself as a person and get exposure to as many different areas of work as possible.

Starting out

In the year since I joined, I’ve had regular formal training including personal skills training and problem-solving workshops. As well as that, I get informal training every day when I’m working on a project. In twelve months I’ve worked in five different industries on three continents. I doubt if I could have done that anywhere but here.

Being a business analyst

My fellow business analysts in London come from all walks of life, from world-class debaters to Olympic sports stars. They are a constant source of inspiration—great consultants and supportive teachers as well as lively colleagues. Many of them have become close friends.

What my job involves

My projects have included a sales transformation for a mobile phone company, an organisational project for a Middle Eastern government, and a strategy project for a major supermarket. During the organisational study I was responsible for interviewing senior clients to help us understand the key issues. As the main team member on the ground, it was my job to synthesise these issues for the engagement manager and partner on my team. I also contributed to our final recommendations for the client’s solution.

Making an impact

What I particularly enjoy about my work is the level of responsibility I’m given even as a recent graduate, and the amount of impact I can have. Being at McKinsey allows me to play a part in influencing the outcome of global challenges and making changes that will shape tomorrow’s world.
