Life as a consultant

The work we do

Whether you would like to explore a range of sectors or specialise in a particular industry, you can pursue your interests in McKinsey’s London office. With its diverse mix of clients, the office provides opportunities to work in a host of different industries with the support of a close-knit community of consultants.

As a member of our global management consulting firm, you’ll have opportunities to advise some of the world’s most prominent organisations from business and the public and not-for-profit sectors. As long as you are eager to learn, we’ll provide you with the resources and tools you need. We’ll coach you, mentor you and support you as you tackle each new challenge and bring value to your clients.

As well as serving clients, we also draw on our knowledge and experience to make a difference to the communities in which we live and work. For example, McKinsey London is a leading supporter of Tech City, an initiative to create a dynamic technology cluster in East London, and TeachFirst, a not-for-profit body that recruits exceptional graduates to teach at schools with a high proportion of students from underprivileged backgrounds. Members of our office take an active part in the debate on economic growth in the UK and globally. Through our work on sustainability we make an important contribution to such issues as water scarcity and rural development.

Training and development

McKinsey is a caring meritocracy. Your progress depends on what you contribute, and we invest enormous resources in helping you develop. You will be on a fast track from the beginning. In your first two years alone we will give you eight weeks of training on basic consulting, advanced problem solving, leadership and client relationship skills.

All our consultants attend a training session with colleagues from other offices roughly every 18 months. These sessions give you a chance to build a network of peers and deepen your knowledge and skills.

Office culture

Some of our colleagues on a sponsored excursion from Lands End to John O'GroatsWorking on client projects is demanding, but we still make time for our families, friends and outside interests. Our team-based approach helps us form close working relationships, and we enjoy spending time together in and out of the office. From regattas and retreats to concerts and the annual office challenge, regular events provide opportunities for us to get together and have fun.

There is a wide range of groups within the office, which help us pursue our outside interests—including art, theatre, wine and various sporting activities. Throughout the year we organise various events and activities to raise funds for selected good causes.

Work-life balance

We are committed to helping our consultants balance their lives. Many people take advantage of our flexible working arrangements to help them balance their career with their personal commitments and interests.

Alumni

Employees and former employees of McKinsey are united by common values. Worldwide more than 26,000 former consultants, many of whom have gone on to play prominent and distinctive roles in other organisations, belong to our alumni network. In the UK there are 1900 alumni in our network, of whom 180 are now CEOs of their companies. Our alumni remain a great source of advice—they are often our most challenging critics and rigorously test our new thinking.
