McKinsey’s Business Technology Practice helps companies in a variety of industries to think strategically about how to use technology to transform their business and create competitive advantage.
We support clients in three main areas:
- Optimizing their technology strategy, architecture, and governance model to provide effective support to the business. We design transformation programs to help clients realize their technology vision and capture new opportunities such as cloud computing.
- Improving the efficiency of their technology function and designing sourcing and location strategies for IT services.
- Using technology to transform business processes and pursue business opportunities. For example, we support clients in introducing digital marketing services and help them realize the benefits of big data.
Technology through a business lens
The Business Technology Practice takes a top management approach and looks at technology through a business lens. We offer independent, objective advice on how technology can improve our clients’ performance. We do not recommend, design, or implement technology products and have no alliances with third-party providers.
The Business Technology Practice has a strong presence in Switzerland, with 25 consultants in Zurich and Geneva. They work on a wide range of projects and serve clients from many different sectors both in Switzerland and globally. Business Technology consultants combine broad consulting skills and experience with a strategic competence in technology.
Recent projects
In one project, Swiss-based Business Technology consultants worked with a division of a large US telecom company that was facing substantial fines for failing to meet service indicators fixed by the regulator. The McKinsey team conducted detailed analyses of the company’s operations and IT support, helped develop a long-term vision, supported it with new processes, IT, and performance scorecards, conducted a pilot, and designed an implementation plan. Together with the client, our team identified 20 immediate actions to improve operations, saving US$5 to $10 million in fines.
Business Technology consultants based in Switzerland reviewed the global IT strategy of a major financial institution in another recent project. This effort yielded deep insights into many areas of the client’s IT practices and led to several improvement initiatives at local and global level. These initiatives have enabled the client’s IT organization to make enormous advances in its ability to support the company’s business strategy worldwide.
