Apply as an associate

We seek people with different backgrounds, experience, and passions. We value diversity because a range of views and ideas helps us to provide keener insights, more innovative thinking, and better solutions for our clients.

Some people come to McKinsey looking for broad opportunities, a fresh challenge, or the chance to make a bigger impact. Others come to build on their specialized skills, knowing that the experience they gain here will open new doors for them.

We have the scale, reach, and culture to help you deepen your skills and your impact.

Who should apply?

We look for exceptional people from a variety of academic fields and professions including financial services, life sciences, and engineering. If you hold an MBA or an advanced professional degree (such as PhD, MD, or JD), or have several years of professional experience, we would be pleased to hear from you.

In addition, you will need:

  • A very good academic record marked by strong analytical skills
  • Experience obtained through previous jobs or internships, time abroad, and extra-curricular achievements
  • A desire for personal impact and a commitment to learning
  • Fluency in either French or German and an excellent command of English.

What associates do

As an associate, you’ll lead a key portion of a client project. You’ll have direct contact with senior clients and work with a high degree of independence. Your tasks might include identifying issues, forming hypotheses, planning and conducting interviews and analyses, developing conclusions into recommendations, and helping to implement change.

We’ll provide extensive training to help you build core consulting skills. As a successful associate, you’ll quickly assume broader responsibilities. After two or three years, you may move into the role of engagement manager. Engagement managers lead client projects, manage teams, coach less experienced colleagues, and take responsibility for initiatives within McKinsey.
