Personal and professional growth

One of the things that keeps me motivated at McKinsey is that I never stop learning. And it goes well beyond learning about particular sectors or functions. Here people learn about themselves, about how to work more effectively in teams, to motivate others, and communicate with clients. There is a culture of feedback that helps people develop—even feedback from junior consultants to senior partners. I have a partner assigned as a mentor who spends significant time collecting input on how I’m doing and advising me on the skills I need to develop.

A unique culture

I worked for three other companies before joining McKinsey, and I was really struck by McKinsey’s unique culture. Here you can call a partner in Brazil who will readily get on the phone to discuss the trends in the infrastructure market there. Another partner will come from Germany to shadow a food and beverage salesperson for a morning. People are incredibly willing to help—McKinsey truly operates as one firm.

Working on things that matter

Before joining McKinsey, I worked for an engineering firm as a project leader in renewable energy. Coincidentally, soon after I joined McKinsey I worked on a project for another large engineering firm: our work involved helping them shape a growth strategy, decide which businesses and geographies to enter, and adapt their organization. In this study, I felt I had the opportunity to shape the future of the company to a much larger extent than I could have imagined in my previous role.
