McKinsey as an enabler

I hold a PhD in photovoltaic solar energy and I worked as a researcher before joining McKinsey. At a certain point, I realized that I had devoted my efforts to deeply understanding sunlight, while neglecting what sunlight illuminates: people, society, and organizations. I decided to change, and McKinsey helped me move from theorizing in the lab to decision-making in the day-to-day experience. One inspiring idea drove me to change: mankind landed on the moon because of engineers, researchers and spacemen, but it was John F. Kennedy who committed a nation to a dream.

We work on a project basis, moving to a new client and a new McKinsey team every few months. This approach develops knowledge and inspiration—it brings opportunities to meet interesting people with different backgrounds and seniority, work hard with them, and build trust-based relationships.

Making an impact

Making recommendations to clients is at the core of McKinsey’s work. And from the recommendation flows action. I have participated in the merger of two important healthcare companies, in the change of the operational model of a bank with around 1,000 branches, and in reducing expenditure at a big telecom player (€500 million in savings!) McKinsey offers you the opportunity to shape the world around you.

Tips for candidates

Believe in your candidacy. Prepare yourself for a constructive discussion. And be brave enough to say “this is my opinion,” and “I don’t know the answer, let’s come up with a solution together.”
