Why McKinsey
I’ve been passionate about management since the age of fifteen, when I helped my parents in the family business during my summer vacations. I studied Business Administration at ESADE in Barcelona, where I heard about McKinsey’s internship program. During the internship, I discovered McKinsey was the place I wanted to be: I worked in teams with brilliant, collaborative, fun people, helping clients address important challenges. It was a tremendous learning opportunity.
A member of the team from day one
As an intern, I was a member of the team from day one. After a two-day training I joined my first project, helping a leading retail bank improve its performance in the small-and-medium-enterprise segment. I was asked to conduct market survey analyses, participate in client meetings, and lead pieces of work. The project leader ensured I got a lot of coaching and frequent feedback.
Fast and continuous learning
Although I joined McKinsey only nine months ago, I have already worked in many different industries including public sector, transport and logistics, and retail and wholesale banking. On top of developing industry knowledge quickly, I have been responsible for many different tasks that helped me build new analytical, interpersonal and communication skills.
Teamwork is a crucial part of McKinsey
The quality of the people, both professional and personal, has made a big impact on me: my teammates are hardworking and demanding, but also extremely collaborative and helpful. For example, in a recent project I was working late at night to prepare a presentation for the client’s chief operating officer. One of my colleagues, who had already finished his work, offered to help me. Even though the engagement is now over, he and I still get together socially.
Non-hierarchical culture
McKinsey’s non-hierarchical culture is remarkable. Every week I have the opportunity to meet with senior partners, present my work to them, and debate as equals. In my second project, for instance, I suggested to a partner that we change the methodology we had previously agreed upon to estimate some important figures. She agreed with my idea and encouraged me to speak up when I had other suggestions.
Valuable feedback
Giving feedback to colleagues is also part of the day-to-day work at McKinsey. I receive ongoing feedback from my project leader so I can strengthen my skills and keep growing as a professional. I am also frequently asked to provide feedback to senior colleagues, including partners.
