Life as a consultant

As a McKinsey consultant, you will help clients achieve, sustain, and regain market leadership. You will work with organizations to explore growth opportunities, investigate entry into international markets, and find and capitalize on new technologies. You will also evaluate portfolio strategies to minimize risk and stay ahead of competitors.

Project portfolio

Thanks to McKinsey’s client network and expertise, you will have the opportunity to work in a variety of industries and practices. Regardless of whether you want exposure to a range of industries and practices or want to dive more deeply into a particular area, McKinsey will give you these opportunities.

As a member of the world’s leading management consulting firm, you will have the opportunity to advise some of the most successful leaders in the world, including CEOs, directors, presidents, government ministers, and heads of NGOs. As long as you are eager to learn, McKinsey will give you the resources and tools and provide you with coaching and the support system you need to get up to speed on a new project and bring value to your client.

Office culture

As McKinsey consultants we spend a lot of time working on client projects, but we still make time for our families, friends, and hobbies.

New Year's party

Because we work in teams, we tend to form close working relationships and enjoy spending time with one another both inside and outside the office. Consultants and other McKinsey colleagues regularly take part in social and leisure activities together: sporting events, music festivals, family retreats, special dinners, and parties.

For many consultants, adventure and sports are an essential part of their social lives. Whether you are interested in hiking or singing karaoke, you will probably find a like-minded colleague at McKinsey. Our consultants get together regularly to play soccer, basketball, and volleyball. They represent the office in tournaments against other companies and professional firms.

Football team

McKinsey's Moscow office also hosts inclusive events for our consultants. We have a tradition of welcoming new consultants by inviting them to a “Get Connected” dinner. The goal is to ensure that consultants have a smooth start and get to know both their peers and senior colleagues. It's a great chance to discuss aspirations, expectations, professional development, and address questions to office leadership in an informal setting. We also organize summer retreats, seasonal parties, and team-building events.

No wonder our people develop friendships that continue long after a client project has ended.

International opportunities

We operate as one global firm, making it easy for our consultants to work internationally and develop a network of clients and colleagues around the world.

McKinsey offers mobility with three types of experience.

  • Engagement loan: you can relocate to another office or client location for a period of up to 6 months to participate as a team member on a specific engagement.
  • One-year transfer: if you want to see what another office is like, you can move there for 1 year.
  • Long-term or permanent transfer: these can sometimes be arranged for consultants who would like to relocate for professional or personal reasons.

Work-life balance

We all face the challenge of making time for our personal and professional priorities. At McKinsey, we encourage one another to find the right work-life balance and provide our people with various options.

You might choose to work fewer days per week or fewer weeks per year, take a leave of absence, or switch to another role temporarily or permanently.
