Roles at McKinsey Portugal

Apply as a business analyst

What business analysts do

As a business analyst, you’ll work on client projects as part of a team and take responsibility for your own part of the problem solving. You’ll play a key role in gathering data and contributing to the team’s recommendations, and you’ll present your work to senior client executives.

In the business-analyst program, you’ll spend two to three years developing broad business skills, after which you will have two options: take educational leave to obtain your MBA (financially supported by McKinsey) or gain further work experience outside of McKinsey or participate in a nonprofit for 1 year.

Who should apply?

We welcome applications from people who have a bachelor’s or master’s degree with less than 2 years of professional experience:

  • a very good academic record marked by strong analytical skills
  • experience obtained through internships, time abroad, and extracurricular achievements
  • a desire for personal impact and a commitment to learning
  • fluency in Portuguese and an excellent command of English

Apply as a junior associate

What junior associates do

As a junior associate, you are responsible for problem solving on a project. In addition, junior associates are tasked with identifying issues, setting and validating hypotheses, interviewing client employees and external experts, gathering and analyzing information from abroad, and preparing proposals, client communications, and presentations.

We’ll provide extensive training to help you build core consulting skills. As a successful junior associate, you’ll quickly assume broader responsibilities. After 1 to 2 years, you may move into the role of associate and lead a key portion of a client project.

Who should apply?

We look for exceptional people from a variety of academic fields and professions, including financial services, life sciences, and engineering. If you are currently enrolled or hold an advanced professional degree (such as a PhD, MD, or JD), or have 2 to 4 years of professional experience, we would be pleased to hear from you.

In addition, you will need the following:

  • a very good academic record marked by strong analytical skills
  • experience obtained through previous jobs or internships, time abroad, and extracurricular achievements
  • a desire for personal impact and a commitment to learning
  • fluency in Portuguese and an excellent command of English

Apply as an associate

What associates do

As an associate, you’ll lead a key portion of a client project. You’ll have direct contact with senior clients and work with a high degree of independence. Your tasks might include identifying issues, forming hypotheses, planning and conducting interviews and analyses, translating conclusions into recommendations, and working directly with senior client leaders to implement change.

We’ll provide extensive training to help you build core consulting skills. As a successful associate, you’ll quickly assume broader responsibilities. After 2 to 3 years, an associate may move into the role of engagement manager. Engagement managers lead client projects, manage teams, coach less experienced colleagues, and take responsibility for initiatives within McKinsey.

Who should apply?

We look for exceptional people from a variety of academic fields and professions including financial services, life sciences, and engineering. If you are currently enrolled or hold an MBA, or have 3 to 5 years of significant professional experience, we would like to hear from you. In addition, you should have the following background:

  • a very good academic record marked by strong analytical skills
  • relevant experience obtained through previous jobs, time abroad, and extracurricular achievements that demonstrates problem solving and leadership skills
  • a desire to make a positive impact and a commitment to learning
  • fluency in Portuguese and an excellent command of English

Apply as a business analyst intern or an associate intern

What business analyst interns and associate interns do

As a business analyst or associate intern, you’ll get a first-hand impression of the day-to-day life of a McKinsey consultant. You’ll be a full-fledged member of a consulting team and experience some of the challenges that a client project presents. You’ll gather and analyze information, meet client teams, prepare proposals and communications, and present findings to senior client executives.

While you work, experienced consultants will provide guidance and coaching and give you a sense of McKinsey’s people, values, and spirit.

At the end of your program you’ll be able to judge whether a career with McKinsey appeals to you, and we’ll decide whether to offer you a permanent position as a consultant in the Lisbon office.

Who should apply?

We offer two different programs, one geared to students pursuing their bachelor's and master's degrees, and the other designed for MBA students. Both programs take place during the summer months and last up to 10 weeks. We welcome applications from students in the summer before the graduating year of their degree and have the following experience:
