How wrong I was!
I joined McKinsey straight out of university with the idea that it would be en enriching 2-year stint to prepare me for my MBA and a professional career elsewhere. How wrong I was—nearly 7 years have passed! In that time, I’ve worked with more than 200 clients and consultants, at more than 15 institutions, in five sectors, in ten countries, on four continents…and counting. What has made me stay? If I had to choose five things, I’d say diversity, learning, talent, energy—and friendships.
Inspirational clients
Every project is different and presents a unique opportunity to keep learning. I have worked with incredible people and made lasting friends both at McKinsey and with clients. On my first trip to Africa, I had the privilege of working as an engagement manager with an amazing public-sector client in Angola; we had to rethink the strategy for an important sector of the economy. It has been really encouraging to see how our work has contributed to the country’s progress. The bonus was the opportunity to travel and discover this magnificent continent.
Great colleagues
More important than specific experiences, I have been really impressed by the high energy and great spirit of the McKinsey teams. We have met intellectual challenges head on, and developed a terrific working environment with clients. Feedback is the best way to develop relationships, and there is always a fantastic feeling between mentors and mentees. The list is endless, and ranges from the thrill of landing in unknown territory to learning from the experiences of very senior clients.
