Real challenges, shaping the future
At McKinsey, you get the opportunity to tackle significant projects. At one stage, I was working with a government agency, restructuring the tax authority for a developing African country. I would never have imagined, 4 years earlier, that I’d be leading a work stream with such potential for shaping a country’s future.
One team—one goal
My first project was working with a telecom operator in one of the largest fiber rollout projects in Europe. Our team consisted of McKinsey consultants and client members in equal proportion. Coordination was key, and I soon understood the meaning of the word “teamwork.” I learned a tremendous amount about the interaction of people, business skills, and technical know-how.
People matter
One of the things I appreciate most at McKinsey is the opportunity to work closely with so many different people, all with distinct styles. This is particularly valuable at the start of your working life. You soon learn to adapt to the way your managers operate. And this, combined with fantastic coaching, feedback, and team organization, accelerates your professional growth.
Pursuing a dream
I wanted to work in development consulting before my MBA—both because this field intrigues me, and because I thought it would help me get more out of my MBA. McKinsey supported me in this pursuit and I was able to extend my academic leave of absence to work in Swaziland for three months. It’s great to know that the company you work for gives you the flexibility to follow your passion.
