Working at McKinsey Netherlands

Office culture

While all our consultants have a strong record of academic or professional achievement, they come from many different disciplines—not only business and economics, but also engineering, medicine, arts, and humanities. We look for people with excellent problem-solving and people skills, leadership potential, healthy curiosity, and the courage to take initiative.

In every one of our client engagements, we bring together the best team of minds from around the world, drawing on the broadest range of industry and functional experience. Teams share a structured problem-solving approach, where all opinions and options are considered, researched, and analyzed carefully before recommendations are made.

The Amsterdam office is home to about 185 consultants. Our work is intense, but we have fun. For example, our colleagues have organized monthly “borrels” (drinks) on our rooftop terrace, ski trips, Sinterklaas and Christmas parties, and office retreats. We celebrate successful engagements on the canals of Amsterdam on our office boat—Max—which anyone in the office can use.

Development opportunities

With our excellent training programs, team-based approach, commitment to mentorship, and global presence, McKinsey offers you unequalled opportunities to develop your career. Working in small teams, you’ll have critical client responsibilities from day one. Your learning will be constant, with assignments that offer you the opportunities to develop your strengths and create new ones. Working at McKinsey enables you to gain powerful leadership and analytical skills so that you can make your mark on clients and the world―whether you stay at McKinsey or choose a different career path.

Community involvement

McKinsey helps the world’s leading organizations solve complex societal challenges related to global health, economic development, education, philanthropy, and climate change. Recent social initiatives of the Amsterdam office include Women Matter, which aims to increase the proportion of women in top management; New Venture, an annual competition for entrepreneurs, with McKinsey consultants providing one-to-one coaching; and, 21minuten.nl, an online survey to help increase public involvement in political debate.

Most of our Amsterdam office members are active in their communities—as sports fans and athletes, musicians, parents, photographers, and volunteers. Some serve on boards of nonprofit organizations; others have founded their own organizations.
