Why I decided to apply
This is going to be a roller-coaster ride, and I am going to enjoy and learn from every moment on it!
My proudest moment
During my first project we helped a client map its carbon, water, and waste footprint. I was proud to see how our analyses inspired them to roll out a sustainability program in several countries. The knowledge about the extent to which they affected their environment was the first step for the client to be able to act on it.
Strangest place I ever had breakfast while at McKinsey
In the back office of a store in rural Thailand.
My toughest moment
Two weeks into my first engagement, I was sent off alone to Brazil to support a retailer with their sustainability strategy. Preparing and facilitating my first board meeting following a week of intense work was challenging, to say the least!
Activities outside McKinsey
One of the things I do in my free time is running the Energy for Change foundation. I spent four months cycling through Africa from Cape Town to Nairobi to raise funds for solar energy projects in Zambia. After returning from that trip, I set up this foundation to raise more awareness for renewable energy, and to continue fundraising for solar power for schools and clinics in rural Africa.
Favorite restaurant in the Netherlands
Toussaint: a small restaurant in my neighborhood (Oud-West) where I love to spend time outside work.
Favorite movie/sites
The Long Way Down (with Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman). This great journey through Africa by motorcycle speaks to my imagination and love of adventure.
Most important lesson I learned from a client
Don't forget to trust your intuition and remember that intelligence doesn't always trump experience.
